Fashion Trends for Fall 2011

As August all too quickly comes to a close, Fall fashions are beginning to hit the stores while the trends are distilled and discussed in pages of the magazines.  There's a lot to choose from this season due to the sheer number of directions that designers have taken their collections.  This editorial spread highlights many of the major trends--the 1970s (particularly those blouses that tie at the neck), the hot color red, the graphic appeal of black and white, ladylike looks from the 1960s, and vintage-inspired lace.  Other trends of note are the 1940s (both day and nighttime dresses), menswear, and statement coats.  Of course I'll be showing how these looks all owe their origins to the costumes in classic cinema, so be sure to stay tuned to GlamAmor.

LOVE these looks...but I wonder, Kimberly, what do you think about the rule that if you wore a look the first time around, you shouldn't do so when it resurfaces? Maybe just lift a few of the color combos or such? I'd love to hear your thoughts on that topic.
Warmly, Kay (who owned that floppy hat and pink/red striped number back in the 70s!)

I think the trick is just to not wear an outfit exactly as you might have worn it before. And never head to toe vintage or it borders on a costume, even if it was originally a look of yours. Often even the editorial looks in the magazines border on a little too costume-y for me, so gather ideas there but don't duplicate.

With any vintage, I think the trick is to mix it with a little new as well. For me, that's consistently the shoes...that way the vintage (dress, coat, whatever) looks modern. A point of pride for me is that people NEVER guess that I'm wearing something old. It's always simply, "Great dress!"

So I think you're very lucky that you can shop your own closet! Just approach it with a fresh eye. Break out that floppy hat, break out that pink/red number...and break them away from their original outfits to mix them with new pieces. You'll be on trend, thoroughly modern, and people will envy your style. : )

Wonderful answer and happily, I can say that that is just what I do! (And, boy, if only I *had* that hat now!) My style has evolved from boho Carole King floppy hat-dom to something closer to Hitchcock lady, but vintage will always be a part of my wardrboe! Thanks, Kimberly, for your thoughts!

It's amazing how these fashion trends from fall 2011 can still be worn this 2014, especially the last image with a lace number.
