Cinema Connection--SHANGHAI EXPRESS Feathers for Fall 2011

One of the best aspects about dressing for Fall and Winter is that you're able to bring much more drama and glamour to your outfits.  One way to do this is with flamboyant feathers, seen on the fashion runways since last Spring and now a bona fide trend extending into Fall as well.  As we've recently been discussing on GlamAmor, the inspiration for feathered frocks is most often attributed to Travis Banton and his stunning style for Marlene Dietrich in 1932's Shanghai Express.  You can see a clear connection to the movie in the opening dress here from Jean Paul Gaultier (above).  But a surprising range of other designers have taken on the trend, too...from the classic aesthetic of Jason Wu to the more avant-garde of Yigal Azrouel.  Check out many of the collections below.

and Oscar De La Renta, Prabal Gurung, Monique Lhuillier, and Emilio Pucci

I really love the feathers -- they're super glamorous and exotic. Even stores as mainstream and conservative as Talbots have feathered items in their collections right now. There's a feather cocktail dress there that's really cute. :)

I've noticed that, too! Feathers have definitely gone way more mainstream than they ever have before. It's almost like when the whole leopard thing started as a trend and now it's just here season after season somehow.

I'll have to check out that feathered frock from Talbots... ;)
